Kathryn Evelyn Bard Cherry was an American painter, ceramicist, and educator associated with the St. Louis art community. Born in Quincy, Illinois, she studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and continued her training in New York, Pennsylvania, and Europe. Early in her career, Cherry specialized in china painting and ceramic decoration, earning significant recognition when she became the only woman to receive a gold medal for painting at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. She later taught ceramic decoration in University City, Missouri, and became regarded as one of the country’s leading instructors in the field.
Around 1915, Cherry increasingly turned her attention to oil painting, developing a Post-Impressionist approach to landscapes and still lifes distinguished by vivid color and expressive pattern. She served as art director at Principia from 1915 until her death in 1931 and exhibited widely throughout her career, receiving numerous awards and honors. Cherry was active in several regional arts organizations, including the St. Louis Artists’ Guild, and her work is represented in the collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum.
