Pre-Revolution Chippendale Carved Mahogany Looking Glass, Labeled

Circa 1769-75, by John Elliot, mahogany veneer over pine with scrolled pediment flanked by shaped ears, molded frame, later glass, the backboard with original bilingual paper label, English inscription reads, JOHN ELLIOTT, at his Looking-Glass Store the Sign of the Bell and Looking Glass, in Walnut Street, PHILADELPHIA,/Import[s a]nd Sells all Sorts of English Looking Glasses, at the lowest Rates. He also new Quicksilvers and Frame[s] old Glasses and supplies People with [new] Glass to their own Frames.

A similar ungilded example sold at Christie's in New York on October 14, 1999 for $10,925. An identical label is on a mirror in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is currently on view in the American Wing.
