An Early Boston Three Gallon Stoneware Jug

Early 19th century, likely by Frederick Carpenter, Boston, Massachusetts, salt-glazed stoneware, unsigned, ovoid form with rising ring tooled spout, bold loop handle attaching to the spout and shoulder, incised capacity mark "3" to the neck, above a floral cobalt slip centering an impressed wheel design.

A three gallon example by Boston maker Frederick Carpenter with a similar impressed and cobalt decorated design is seen in the Crocker Farm July 16, 2016 Stoneware Auction, Lot 136.

Scattered hairline cracks above the base rim; some chips to base rim; 1/4-inch firing pop to the body; center underside with firing crack and glazed over iron oxide slip, with similar colored drip to the spout (likely in the making); UV light revealing no discernible repairs to the spout and handle.
