J. Ralph Wilcox was an American artist known for his Florida landscapes and coastal scenes, particularly those inspired by the Daytona, Tomoka River, and Halifax River regions where he settled in the early 1900s. After working for the Elmira Portrait Company in New York during the 1890s, Wilcox relocated seasonally to Florida, eventually establishing homes and studios in Seabreeze and Daytona. An avid traveler and outdoorsman, he explored Florida extensively by boat, sketching and photographing the state’s rivers, coastlines, and subtropical scenery for use in his paintings. Wilcox operated an art store and floating studio aboard his houseboat, Manatee. He passed away at the young age of 49, by which time he was a well-known and respected artist of old Florida.
