Two Handmade Vintage Quilts

Cotton; the first 20th century, with an optic pattern in red and white triangles and squares, hemmed to white back with no binding (67 x 77 1/2 in.); the second late 19th or early 20th century, with four Star of Bethlehem medallions in red, tan, yellow, green, and pink prints, on white, red print sashing divided by appliqued leafing branches tipped with red, the backing off white, the binding a red print, velcro sewn to one edge for hanging (82 x 82 in.).

The red and white quilt is worked in a pattern dubbed "San Diego" in the popular newspaper quilting column titled Nancy Page's Quilt Club by Florence LaGanke Harris, which was syndicated nationally, and in Canada, from 1927-1944.

The Star of Bethlehem quilt motif is also known as the Lone Star and the Mathematical Star, and dates back to 1830s Maryland. This example is likely made in the 1920s.

Red and white quilt is bright with a few tiny stains and mild discoloration, otherwise good estate condition; the Star of Bethlehem quilt with discoloration, small stains, a few small tears, some dye bleed.
