The Light Factory in Charlotte was founded in 1973 by a group of photographers who wanted to support each others' artistic goals and growth. Over the years the organization grew to a brick and mortar gallery with a strong community outreach arm. Currently The Light Factory helps to tutor new artists on how to pursue their craft, facilitates art education in school, and provides gallery space for photography exhibitions.

The first Light Factory Auction was held exactly 40 years ago, in 1980. Every year the auction raises funds to help pursue The Light Factory's mission of creating a community through the art of photography. This year's sale features 42 original photographic works, a selection of which are shown below.
