Two 19th Century Verse Samplers

Both worked in multi color silk threads on linen ground, the first having top register dated 1836 above a fruit-filled bowl, flowers and butterflies above pious verse, field with floral bouquets and oversized birds perched on trees, stitched between is makers name "Ellen / Baxter / Aged / 10 years" and all within a strawberry border (DOA 20.5 x 15.75 in.) (with foxing and staining; scattered holes); the second with an alphabet band to top above pious verse, field with floral and figural design elements, and with a variation of Robert Herrick's 17th century poem "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time," stitched to bottom register with maker's name and date "Ann Neal Aged 12 Years 1840" and all within a strawberry border (DOA 18 x 14.75 in.) (with loss; fading; foxing; some staining).
