Founded in 1939 as "Joh. Gobber, Horlogerie", the name Sicura was found on watches as early as the 1940s, and by 1955 the company name was changed to "Montres Sicura SA". In the 1960s, Ernest Schneider took over as owner and successfully lead Sicura through the quartz crisis of the 1970s, moving from mechanical to electromechanical to quartz watches. In 1978, Breitling succumbed to the quartz crisis and seeing an opportunity, Schneider purchased the rights to the names "Breitling" and "Navitimer" from the Breitling family. Within a few years of the purchase, the name Sicura was phased out in favor of Breitling. On November 29, 1993 Montres Sicura AG officially changed its name to Breitling AG. Ernest Schneider continued as president of Breitling until his death in 2015, leading Breitling to become the brand it is today.
