Damian Stamer is an American contemporary painter known for his atmospheric and introspective landscapes that explore memory, place, and the passage of time. Born and raised in North Carolina, Stamer draws deeply from the rural scenes of his youth, blending traditional Southern imagery—such as barns, fields, and back roads—with expressive abstraction. His layered technique often merges structured, photographic detail with gestural brushwork and painterly distortion, creating compositions that feel both hauntingly familiar and dreamlike. Through this interplay of realism and abstraction, Stamer captures the tension between permanence and impermanence, personal history and collective memory.
Stamer received his BFA from Arizona State University and his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He also studied at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts as a Fulbright grantee, and the State Academy of Art and Design in Stuttgart, Germany as a Rotary Ambassadorial scholar. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including a solo show at the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina; and exhibitions at Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, North Carolina and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
