Robert Ellison Singleton is an American artist renowned for his luminous paintings that explore the interplay of light, clouds, and horizon lines. Born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Singleton studied at the College of William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was mentored by Theresa Pollak, a student of Hans Hofmann.
In 1978, seeking solitude and inspiration, he relocated to a remote mountaintop in Hardy County, West Virginia, where he continues to live and work. Singleton's art delves into themes of duality and transcendence, often reflecting his personal journey through trauma, loss, and spiritual growth. His work has been exhibited nationally and is held in numerous public and private collections. In 2022, he was honored as a Master Artist Fellow by the Tamarack Foundation for the Arts. His life and artistic contributions are also the focus of the documentary House in the Clouds: The Artistic Life of Robert Singleton.
