North Carolina painter Matt Cooper is a storyteller and narrator of the dark side of the human condition. His paintings question a great range of contemporary issues. In many instances, he documents the human dramas that result from abuses of alcohol, drugs, and power.

Cooper was born in rural North Carolina and spent his high school years in Europe. His connection to the rural South, combined with wider experiences abroad and in large urban centers, has given Cooper the ability to see things from a distinctively unique perspective. His artistic style is inspired by his background in journalism, which he studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. (Courtesy of Gallery C)
