Clifford Lee was an American painter celebrated for his evocative portraits of jazz musicians and scenes from African American life. Born in Illinois, Lee studied at the Kendall Academy, the Grand Rapids Art Gallery, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His early work in the 1950s embraced a social realist style, which evolved into expressive, music-infused compositions during the 1970s. Lee's paintings, often featuring jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, capture the rhythm and soul of Black American culture.
