Jan Schmuckal is an Impressionist and Tonalist painter based in St. Charles, Illinois. A graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Industrial Design, Schmuckal spent many years working in the design industry before returning to painting full time. Seeking a more expressive and atmospheric approach than the realism required in commercial design, she developed a style influenced by the American Tonalist movement and refined her technique through workshops and independent study. Her paintings emphasize mood, simplicity, and the changing effects of light, often executed alla prima in a single session to preserve immediacy and spontaneity.

Over the course of her career, Schmuckal has exhibited in regional and national shows, taught painting workshops and art classes, and operated several studios and galleries, including a longtime gallery in a historic 19th-century home in Geneva, Illinois. Known for her rich color harmonies and evocative compositions, her work reflects a deep sensitivity to atmosphere and light while maintaining a distinctly contemporary interpretation of Tonalist traditions.

Good estate condition.
